The Big Skirts are a powerhouse all-female choir led by India Bourne. Established in 2016, the choir started with only a handful of women but quickly grew into a tight-knit group of regulars who India says now feel like her extended family. We are sisters, mothers, daughters, artists, teachers, doctors, environmentalists, lawyers, seamstresses, actresses, chefs and much more. We’ve been through a lot over the years and have grown even closer as a result of singing together. It was always the intention to create a fun, inclusive and relaxed space to come together, knowing the joy and therapeutic value of singing and how it can benefit us all.
As well as enjoying a soothing American folksong or lullaby the group don’t shy away from difficult arrangements and testing harmonies. Learning everything by ear, the singers enjoy being in their bodies and sometimes use body percussion punctuate the flow of their voices. Expect to hear a mix of alt pop arrangements, classic covers with a twist, world music and original compositions written for the choir.
